17 foods not to give your dog

  1. The Onion Family
    • Onion, garlic and chives can cause stomach upset and red blood cell damage. Symptoms may appear up to a few days later after consumption.
  2. Chocolate
    • Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. All human chocolate is toxic but darker chocolate is more toxic than milk chocolate.
  3. Caffeine (tea bags, coffee beans, energy drinks)
    • Dogs are more sensitive to the effects of caffeine than people. Small amounts of prepared tea or coffee are unlikely to do any harm but if your dog eats coffee beans or tea bags, they could show signs of caffeine poisoning.
  4. Macadamia nuts
    • Macadamia nuts contain a toxin that can result in symptoms such as weakness in a dogโ€™s hind legs, lethargy, diarrhoea, vomiting, tremors and fever.
  5. Mouldy foods
    • Mouldy food (bread, cheese etc.) contain a lot of toxins. Ensure that your dog cannot access your bins and does not eat food from other peopleโ€™s bins on refuse collection day.
  6. Corn on the cob
    • Corn on the cob can cause a blockage in your dogโ€™s intestine, which can be fatal.
  7. Avocado
    • Avocados contain Persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs.
  8. Xylitol (sweetner)
    • Sweet sugar-free foods, chewing gum and drinks (including some peanut butters) contain an artificial sweetener called Xylitol. If your dog consumes this, they can go into hypoglycaemia which is linked to liver failure and blood clotting disorders.
  9. Alcohol
    • This can lead to sickness, diarrhoea and even central nervous system damage.
  10. Cooked Bones
    • Avoid giving your dog a cooked bone, or bones, at all cost. These can easily splinter and result in a perforation of the gut, which can be fatal.
  11. Milk
    • Dogs cannot easily digest the lactose in milk. Therefore, feeding your dog milk can cause diarrhoea or stomach upset.
  12. Cheese
    • Like milk, dogs cannot easily digest cheese. Eating it can cause sickness and diarrhoea.
    • Blue cheeses, in particular (e.g. stilton), are particularly harmful. Many contain roquefortine C, which may cause vomiting and diarrhoea, tremors, twitching, seizures and fever.
  13. Grapes and Raisins
    • Raisins and any foods that contain them are toxic to dogs. Grapes and raisins (dried grapes) may cause liver damage and kidney failure.
  14. Currant and Sultanas
    • As above.
  15. Rhubarb
    • Can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach upset.
  16. Green tomatoes
    • The green parts of a tomato plant and underripe tomatoes contain high amounts of Solanine, which is poisonous to dogs. Symptoms can include stomach upset, poor coordination, muscle weakness, tremors and seizures.
  17. Nutmeg
    • This is unlikely to cause any major issues if listed as an ingredient because the amounts are so small but it could still give your dog an upset stomach.
